Upon Arrival at The Fox Residence Guinea Pig Sanctuary
Pumbaa and Simba
Pumbaa and Simba were living free range in someones backyard with very little care provided to them. They developed the worst mange and fungal infections that we have seen here at The Fox Residence. Their original owners reported that alongside their deteriorating health, the boys were attacked by birds as well. The owners approached us as they did not want to provide vet care. A couple of weeks later the boys were dropped off, their little bodies were raw and bleeding, scabby, scaley little messes.
For weeks the boys were depressed, they would huddle together facing the corner of their cage. They were itchy and sore, and they had seizures for many months even after they started to feel a little better. After months of bandages, baths and medical treatment we saw the boys go from defeated to legendary. Their little naked bums were notorious as they grew back into gorgeous fluffy butts.
They are now fat, healthy and fluffy boys who love fleecy tunnels and sleeping in their hay. I hope with all my heart that they don’t remember their previous life or their suffering. Pumbaa and Simba took 6+ months to recover. For an animal who lives just 5-8 years, this is a huge chunk of their life spent suffering. Mange and fungal infections are easy to prevent and there is no reason for any animal to suffer the way these boys did.
Although the boys are now an incredible image of health compared to the day they arrived here at The Fox Residence, they both still show several bald spots where the scarring on their skin was too bad for the hair to regrow, and when touched in their previously raw areas often still flinch at touch.
